Project Overview

ACS was entrusted with the challenging task of retrofitting The Mitre, a listed building of historic interest, to bring it up to modern sustainability standards while preserving its architectural heritage. The project required a delicate balance between maintaining the building's historical character and integrating cutting-edge sustainable technologies.

Sustainable Solutions Implemented

To ensure The Mitre met high energy efficiency standards, ACS implemented several innovative solutions designed to improve thermal performance and reduce energy consumption, including:

  • Fabric Upgrades: Careful attention was given to upgrading the building’s fabric to improve insulation without compromising its heritage value. This included enhancing wall and roof insulation to reduce heat loss.
  • Modern Glazing: The installation of energy-efficient, double-glazed windows allowed for improved heat retention while maintaining the building’s aesthetic integrity. This helped reduce energy demand and increase comfort for occupants.
  • Energy-Saving Services Control Systems: ACS integrated advanced energy-saving controls, including smart heating and lighting systems, to ensure that energy use was optimized across the building. These systems enable efficient management of energy consumption, reducing waste and improving operational efficiency.

Air Source Heat Pumps: To provide sustainable heating, we installed an air source heat pump system, a renewable energy solution that uses external air to heat the building. This system reduced the reliance on traditional, high-emission

Outcome

The retrofitting of The Mitre not only preserved its historical charm but also transformed it into an energy-efficient, modern building. This project is an example of how older buildings can be adapted for the future without losing their character. The success of The Mitre underscores ACS’s ability to integrate sustainability into even the most complex and sensitive projects.
